Peru: Giant squid, textile exports expand in Jan-July 2018

Peruvian giant squid exports to China increased 45%, thus reaching US$121 million between January and July 2018, Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) informed Monday.

Therefore, China has become the main destination for the Inca country’s giant squid, exceeding the shipments sent to Spain.

This increase was underpinned by the rise in FOB price (+43%) and exported volume (36,160 tons; +1%).

It should be noted giant squid is the country’s top exported non-traditional fishery product (52% of the total), followed by shrimps (14%).

In September 2017, Peru’s National Service of Fisheries Health (Sanipes) informed shrimps were authorized to enter the Chinese market.

Textile exports

On the other hand, Peru’s textile shipments to the Asian country increased 62% in the first seven months of the current year, reaching US$48 million.

Thus, China has become the second major destination after the United States.

This expansion was driven by higher exports of wool and fine hair (+63%, over 90% of the total), yarns and fabrics (+79%), and cotton clothing (+19%).
