The government announced the first package of measures and regulations designed to promote the forestry sector, through legal access and sustainable use of timber resources. The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), through the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (Serfor), approved the Official List of Forest Species that includes 275 species. Its main goals include the standardization of their denominations in order to facilitate their registration and monitoring, and to prevent illegal logging. The list includes the scientific name, the family, the common name and the commercial name of each species.
It was also established that the use of the updated formats of the Book of Operations of the Qualifying Titles for Timber Forest Utilization and the Operations Book of Primary Transformation Centers of Forest and Timber Products and By-Products, known as sawmills, will be required as of 01 January 2020. Serfor will lead and reinforce a training program for the use of both books for the actors related to the productive chain of wood, to improve its traceability and guarantee the legal origin of the forest resource. To improve the actions of supervision, surveillance and control, an agreement will be signed between Serfor, the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat).
