The fortress of Choquequirao is located in Vilcabamba in Cusco, and is estimated to have been built by Tupac Inca Yupanqui and Huayna Capac between 1471 and 1527.
It is known as the sister city of Machu Picchu. It is located north of Machu-Picchu but also in the mountains down the Andes and looking at the Amazonian jungle.
The majesty of its construction served to protect itself from the Spanish invasion where the inhabitants took refuge for about 36 years according to researchers.
