Ayacucho: Sondondo Tourist Corridor to Be Promoted

At six in the morning, when they leave their nests, one can come face to face with a condor in the valley of Sondondo. They are birds that fly at least for one hour over the Mayobamba canyon, in the Ayacucho region, and then fly to the beaches of Marcona, on the coast of Nasca (Ica), looking for food.

The show is incredible because, unlike the Colca Canyon in Arequipa, where birds can be observed from a considerable distance, here the condors pass less than 10 meters away from tourists. This is one of the reasons why the promotion of the tourist corridor of the Sondondo valley has been declared of national interest and is included in the Regional Strategic Plan for Tourism (Pertur). Other activities to do in the area include canoeing, experiential tourism and trekking.

Law No. 30,971, published in El Peruano, states that the Regional Government of Ayacucho will promote the natural, archaeological, historical and gastronomic resources of the Sondondo valley, as a national tourist destination. The Ministry of Culture will be responsible for evaluating the declaration of the Sondondo valley as a living cultural landscape to promote research, conservation and enhancement of its cultural heritage.
